Church History

The Open Door Church, Khojewala, located in Kapurthala district of Punjab, India, traces its origins to the late 1980s. The ministry activities that later led to the establishment of the church were initiated in 1989 by Bishop Dr. Sant Harbhajan Singh, a native of Khojewala. During this period, Christian congregations in rural Punjab were relatively limited, and the outreach activities began through regular religious discourses and gatherings in the village.

In 1991, the formal establishment of The Open Door Church took place in Khojewala. The church gradually developed as a local center for Christian worship and community gatherings. Over time, its activities expanded, leading to an increase in attendance from nearby areas. In 1996, a formal management committee was constituted to oversee the administrative and organizational functioning of the church.

Initially, the church operated from a modest structure. As attendance grew, the building was expanded to accommodate a larger congregation, resulting in the construction of an approximately 8,500 square foot hall. Further infrastructural developments were undertaken periodically in response to the growing number of attendees.

Bishop Dr. Sant Harbhajan Singh continued his religious leadership until his death in 2011. Following this, pastoral responsibilities were assumed by Pastor Dr. Harpreet Singh Deol, who continued the church’s activities and organizational development. In 2012, an additional expansion of approximately 7,500 square feet was completed to improve facilities and manage increased attendance.

As of the 2010s, limitations of available space prompted discussions within the congregation and management committee regarding the construction of a larger church complex. Plans for a new and expanded place of worship were initiated under the leadership of Pastor Dr. Harpreet Singh Deol, with the objective of accommodating the growing congregation and expanding community-related activities.

The Open Door Church has remained active in organizing regular worship services, prayer meetings, and community-oriented initiatives, and it continues to function as a religious institution serving Christian congregants in the Kapurthala region.
